The affordable handheld 3D scanner market was essentially created by two companies pulling in different directions. Revopoint attacked the price, bringing scanners down to a few hundred dollars. SHINING 3D's Einstar line attacked the workflow, removing the laptop from the equation.
Both worked. They produced quite different tools.
The short version
Revopoint if you are working at a desk, the budget is tight, and your objects are mostly small to medium.
Einstar Vega if you scan in the field, you work on large objects like vehicle panels, and the time you save not hauling a laptop is worth the price difference.
Price
There is no ambiguity here. Revopoint's range starts in the low hundreds and its mid-tier models sit well under a thousand. The Einstar Vega is around $1,999.
That is a genuine gap and it should weigh heavily unless the Vega's specific advantages map onto your actual work. They are real advantages, but they are not universal ones.
The standalone question
This is the Vega's whole argument.
Revopoint scanners are tethered — they connect to a computer or, on some models, a phone, which handles the processing. You need that device present and powered for the scanner to work.
The Vega processes onboard. It has a 6.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen, a 48MP camera, 32GB eMMC plus a 512GB SSD, a 5000mAh battery, and enough compute to capture and handle models unaided. You carry one 535g object and nothing else.
Whether that is worth roughly a thousand dollars depends entirely on where you scan. In a workshop with a laptop on the bench, it is a convenience. Scanning a car panel in a driveway, or architectural detail on a building, it changes what is possible. One studio reportedly scanned building elements in rainfall — not something you do with a laptop balanced on a wall.
Scanning technology
The Vega combines two technologies in one unit. MEMS drives its HD mode, using micro-mirrors to direct laser beams for high-precision capture of small, detailed objects. Structured light handles larger objects and copes better with variable lighting, including strong sunlight.
Revopoint's models generally use structured light or infrared approaches, with different models specialised for different object sizes — the smaller-object models and larger-object models being genuinely different products rather than modes of one product.
Practically: the Vega covers a wider range of object sizes in one device. With Revopoint you may find yourself wanting a second model.
Object size and session limits
The Vega handles objects up to roughly two metres in a single scan — a park bench was used as a reference point in testing. Beyond that you merge multiple scans.
Its real constraints are battery and memory. Around 90 minutes of battery in testing, extendable with a power bank. Onboard memory can fill within about 15 minutes of continuous large-object scanning, which means managing storage during a session.
Revopoint's tethered design sidesteps both constraints — your laptop has the storage and the mains power. That is an underrated advantage for long studio sessions.
Software
The Vega uses StarVision on desktop for full editing, and the SHINING 3D Digital Cloud for viewing, measuring, sharing and wireless upload. Export to STL and OBJ covers standard modelling and printing workflows.
Revopoint uses its own Revo Scan software, which has matured considerably and is generally well regarded at the price.
Neither is a reason to choose one over the other on its own.
Learning curve
Both require learning. The Vega's interface is deliberately phone-like, which helps, but calibration with the supplied glass board is required at setup and periodically after, and getting good scans of reflective or dark surfaces is a skill regardless of hardware.
SHINING publishes extensive tutorial videos. Watch some before buying either brand — they are the most honest preview of what the work actually involves.
Which for which work
Automotive customisation, body panels, on-site scanning: Vega. Large curved surfaces, outdoor lighting, no bench available — this is the case it was built for.
Small parts, miniatures, desk-based reverse engineering: Revopoint. You are next to a computer anyway, and the money saved buys a lot of filament.
Architectural and preservation work: Vega, for portability and weather tolerance.
Trying 3D scanning to see whether it is useful: Revopoint. Do not spend $2,000 finding out.
Production workflow where scanning is a daily job: Vega, if fieldwork is involved; either if it is not.
Before you buy either
Write down the three objects you most want to scan and their dimensions. That single exercise resolves most of this decision, because object size and location determine almost everything else.
Check export formats against your CAD or slicer. Factor in a power bank for the Vega if sessions run long.
