A single-car garage is roughly 12 by 20 feet. That is enough for a complete, serious home gym. It is not enough for a complete home gym plus the mistakes people make getting there.
The constraint is not floor area. It is ceiling height, working space around equipment, and the order you buy things in.
Measure before you shop, not after
Three measurements, and take them properly.
Ceiling height. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the ceiling. Garage door tracks, light fittings, exposed joists and opener motors all count. A full power cage runs 82 to 90 inches tall, and you need roughly a foot of clearance above the pull-up bar to actually hang from it.
This is the single most common reason equipment gets returned. A cage that physically fits but leaves you unable to do pull-ups has cost you a feature you paid for.
If your ceiling is marginal, look at half racks or short racks rather than full cages. Many brands, Mikolo included, make half racks with adjustable width for exactly this situation.
Usable floor width. Measure between the walls at the height where the equipment sits, not at floor level — garages often narrow at the base with kerbs and skirting.
Depth you can commit. If the car still parks there sometimes, you need a layout that tolerates that. Be honest now rather than resentful later.
The footprint is bigger than the equipment
This is where plans fall apart.
A multi-function cage with a cable crossover is roughly 44 inches wide and 29 inches deep. That is the steel. You also need:
Room to walk a loaded barbell out of the rack and back
Clearance either side to load plates onto a 7ft bar
Full arm extension for cable flyes, which is wider than the machine
Somewhere to stand for overhead work
Do this before you buy anything: tape the footprint onto the garage floor, add three feet on every side you will use, and live with it for a day. Walk around it. Open the garage door. Park the car if you need to.

Choose multi-function over multiple machines
In a single-car garage, one station that does many things beats several specialised pieces. This is exactly the case that multi-function cages were designed for.

Plates. Buy more than you think. Confirm Olympic 2-inch versus standard 1-inch and match your rack.
A bench, ideally adjustable.
Flooring. Rubber mats, at least under the rack and lifting area. This protects the slab, reduces noise, and stops plates bouncing.
Everything else, later, once you know what you actually miss.
If you own nothing, a package deal bundling rack, bench, bar and plates is usually better value and removes compatibility guesswork.
Things specific to garages
The floor is probably not level. Concrete slabs slope toward the door for drainage. Check with a spirit level before positioning a rack, and shim if needed — an unlevel rack is unpleasant and slightly unsafe.
Temperature swings cause condensation, which causes rust. A dehumidifier is cheap insurance in a damp climate, and wiping down bars matters more in a garage than indoors.
Anchoring. Some racks can be bolted to the slab, which improves stability considerably. Decide before assembly, because retrofitting means disassembly.
Noise travels. If the garage adjoins living space or a neighbour, rubber flooring and dropping plates carefully matter.
Budget for assembly
Racks ship flat-packed across multiple heavy boxes and take two to four hours to build, sometimes an entire day for one person. Block the time out and get help.
Two pieces of practical advice from people who have done it: use real tools rather than the included hex keys — a socket wrench, open-end wrench and a driver with a socket adapter. And pay close attention to any step specifying finger-tighten versus fully tighten, because getting that wrong means taking it apart again.
Also check delivery terms. Heavy equipment is often kerbside only, which means moving several hundred pounds of boxes up a driveway yourself.
