A KVM switch is a cheap solution to an annoying problem, right up until you buy the wrong one. Then it becomes an expensive solution to a worse problem, because now your windows rearrange every time you switch machines and you are back to swapping cables by hand.
Almost every bad KVM experience traces to the same handful of specification mistakes. Here is how to avoid them, in the order that matters.
1. EDID emulation is not optional
Start here, because it eliminates half the market.
EDID is the handshake where your monitor tells a computer what resolution and refresh rate it supports. On a switch without EDID emulation, switching away from a computer makes that computer think the monitor has been unplugged. It reacts accordingly: resolution resets, windows pile onto one display, and your carefully arranged desktop is gone. Switch back and you rebuild it.
EDID emulation keeps feeding each connected machine valid display information whether or not it is the active one. Nothing moves.
The switches that lack this are the ones at the very bottom of the price range. They are cheap for exactly this reason. Filter them out first and everything after this gets easier.
On multi-port switches, look specifically for emulators on each input port rather than one shared.
2. Match the resolution and refresh rate to the monitor you own
Not the monitor you might buy. The one on your desk now.
4K at 60Hz covers ordinary office and productivity use. Most people are here and most switches support it.
4K at 120Hz or 144Hz is the gaming tier. If you have a high-refresh display and a gaming machine, you need HDMI 2.1 and you should also look for VRR and ALLM support.
8K at 60Hz requires DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC compression. Genuinely necessary for very few people.
Buying above your display gains you nothing today. Buying below it means running your expensive monitor at reduced capability through the switch, which defeats the point of owning it.
3. Count your ports honestly
Two numbers matter and people conflate them.
Computers — how many machines connect into the switch. Monitors — how many displays connect out of it.
A "2x2" switch means two computers and two monitors. A "4x1" means four computers, one monitor. Read the model description carefully, because the naming conventions vary and an expensive mistake here is easy.
Buy one spare computer port if you can afford it. People add machines.
4. Check the USB version
Often overlooked and genuinely annoying when wrong.
USB 2.0 is fine for a keyboard and mouse. If you also want to switch an external drive, a webcam, a microphone or a docking hub through the KVM, you want USB 3.0 or better for the bandwidth.
Some switches double as docking stations with USB 3.0 hubs, Gigabit ethernet and charging. For a laptop setup where you want one cable to handle everything, these are worth the premium.
5. Check cable inclusion
Some switches ship with every cable you need. Some ship with none.
Four high-bandwidth HDMI or DisplayPort cables bought separately can add a meaningful amount to the total, and cheap cables are a common cause of flickering and dropouts at 4K and above. If the listing does not clearly state what is included, assume nothing is and budget accordingly.
6. Flag your awkward setup before buying
Some configurations break cheap switches in confusing ways:
Mac and PC mixed — generally fine, but check
Thunderbolt docks in the chain — this is a common failure point
DisplayLink adapters — same
MST for daisy-chained displays — needs explicit support
If any of these apply, buy from a manufacturer that publishes compatibility guidance rather than one that does not. TESmart, for instance, specifically targets these setups; many cheaper brands do not mention them at all, which usually means they have not tested them.
7. Decide how you want to switch
Button on the unit, hotkey on the keyboard, wired remote, or IR remote. Most decent switches offer several.
Hotkey switching is the one you will actually use daily. Check which key combination it uses and whether it clashes with anything you rely on.
If the unit will live out of reach — behind a monitor or in a cabinet — a remote stops mattering as a nice-to-have and starts mattering a lot.
A checklist before you order
EDID emulation confirmed, ideally per port
Resolution and refresh rate matched to your actual monitor
Computer and monitor counts correct, with a spare port if affordable
USB version adequate for what you are switching
Cables included, or budgeted for
Compatibility checked if Thunderbolt, DisplayLink, Mac or MST are involved
Switching method suits where the unit will sit
Warranty terms noted, and registration done on arrival if the brand offers extensions
Then check for a code
